The western wall currently presents an unattractive appearance, both aesthetically and in terms of its condition. A building with such a blind wall looks truncated and unfinished.
Condition
This wall has no cornices. The masonry absorbs water from heavy rain coming from the west. Salt efflorescence damages the bricks in the attic storey. For the same reason, the inner masonry is also deteriorated, and the plaster has been renewed repeatedly over large areas. The removal of the gable of the end wall is necessary.
The Building
The house is a freestanding corner building. The south-eastern corner is slightly accentuated, with cornices and the roof form creating the impression of a tower. As a result of the renovation works, the north-western corner will be designed as a stair tower. After the creation of window openings in the former gable wall, the south-western corner should appear visually balanced. In this case, the dormer window (guitarde) will reinforce the perception of the building corner as an independent architectural element.
Creating Window Openings for the Symmetry of the Building Corner
The blind and gloomy western wall should be given not only architectural structure but also a healthier condition. Designing window openings is one of the solutions. On the one hand, the roof and façade should be symmetrical at the building corner. On the other hand, the masonry should absorb less water from the exterior beyond the cornices.
Windows on the western façade facing the city will not only give the building harmony but will also open picturesque views of the old town from the apartments. In addition, this side is sunny, allowing daylight to enter the rooms through the windows. All this will improve the quality of life.
Balconies
On each floor, a door is planned in the central opening with a small balcony. The balcony platforms may extend about one meter from the wall line. This will not interfere with the neighboring building, which is located 12 meters away.
