Historic Shaft Well

Stone in the wall of the historic well with the inscription “1850”.

While clearing the lower plot of house No. 35, a well was discovered. On the upper stone there was a neatly engraved date “1850”. The well had been completely filled in. We excavated about three meters down. Its total depth is estimated to be around twenty meters.

Condition

Up to a height of approximately two meters the well is lined with stones that were extracted on site during the digging of the well. Below this begins the natural bedrock. The condition of the stones was poor: some were cracked, others partially collapsed. Altogether the structure looked unstable and would hardly have supported any above-ground construction.

Restoration works

All stones down to the bedrock were dismantled. Instead, boulders of amphibolite were used. These stones are harder, stronger and frost-resistant. They were brought from the area near Schleiz and collected from fields. Most of the stones weigh roughly around 100 kg each. In total, approximately 20 tons were laid. Five basalt stones were also placed in the well; they were brought from the forest near Istvan's house in Szentbékkállá, where his yurt once stood.

Five basalt stones were placed in the well and brought to Greiz from the nearby forest close to Istvan's house and yurt in Szentbékkállá. A couple of the stones were found not far from his gate.
